Mystery Solved! – Update on Rogue Creamery Smoked Blue
A few months ago I purchased a sample of the Rogue Creamery Smoked Blue. It was a great blue cheese, but there was no smoked flavor. None. Nada. Zip. See earlier post. At the time I was puzzled but shrugged and decided my palate wasn’t refined enough to pick up the flavor. So, I recorded this as a great blue cheese, as long as you don’t want a smoky blue.
However, lucky for me, I had the chance to speak to one of the reps from Rogue Creamery during the Oregon Beer and Wine Festival last weekend. Apparently, for a short period last year, they had a problem with their smoker resulting in a few batches of cheese going to market with no smokiness. That’s been fixed and she gave me a generous sample, and it was decidedly different from the cheese I had purchased.
I could smell the smokiness right away. The smoked flavor itself was subtle, so the tang of the blue cheese still shone through. I stood at their booth, nodding my head and saying things like, “Ah ha! I taste it now!”.
So, for those who want a blue with a lovely, yet subtle smoked flavor, mystery solved! Get yourself to the cheese monger.
